KID League Draft Recap

Each year, eleven of my best friends and I participate in a keeper league fantasy football league, dubbed the "Keeper? I Don't Even Like Her!" League (KID League, for short).  This post, recapping the live draft we at a bachelor party in the Poconos last Saturday, is for them.

BEST PICKS
1. Stevie Johnson, Round 3 (Colin) - Johnson broke out in his 3rd year with 1,073 yards and 10 TDs and is returning with the same QB and coaches.  And yet people passed on him for Mario Manningham and Michael Crabtree.  Believe it or not, receiving yards in Buffalo count just as much as they do in New York.
2. Sidney Rice, Round 4 (Superior) - Rice caught 1,312 yards two years ago.  He carries an injury risk, but so do Percy Harvin and Austin Collie, two receivers taken a round before him.
3. Anthony Armstrong, Round 10 (Colin) - Armstrong's receiving yards per game in his first NFL season: 58.  Tampa Bay's Mike Williams: 60.  I'd rather have Armstrong in the 10th round than Williams in the 1st.
4. Beanie Wells, Round 7 (Dave) - I drafted Ryan Williams two rounds earlier, but there's still a good chance that Wells finally rewards the Cardinals big investment in him.
5. Roy Helu, Round 8 (Stratis) - The Redskins backfield, and offense in general, is a mess, but I bet Helu gets enough trips on Mike Shanahan's RB carousel to become a decent flex player.

WORST PICKS
I did not have a gripe with many of the early round picks, but there were some real questionable decisions in the mid to late rounds.
1. New England DEF, Round 7 (Hunt) - Even if I did support taking a top defense early, the Patriots are not a top defense.  They were 8th in the NFL in points allowed last year and 25th in yards allowed.  If you're going to reach for a defense, at least pick a decent one.
2. Aaron Hernandez, Round 7 (Kevin) - This pick would have been bad enough on its own, as Hernandez wasn't even in the top 15 of most TE rankings.  But the fact that Kevin already took Antonio Gates with an early pick makes this selection indefensible.
3. Colt McCoy, Round 7 (Superior) - Nick promised we would be "blown away" by his 7th round pick.  We were, because Colt McCoy shouldn't have gone until the 10th.
4. Brandon Jacobs, Round 4 (Colin) - I know Jacobs jumped back above 5 yards per carry last year, but even if the Giants don't re-sign Ahmad Bradshaw, B-Jac's days of 20 carry games are long gone.
5. Tim Tebow, Round 8 (Stratis) - Mike loves his running QBs, and I don't understand why, since our 6 point passing touchdowns lower their value.  Looking past that, Stratis still could have had Tebow a couple rounds later.

BEST RBs
Superior (Adrian Peterson, Rashard Mendenhall, Knowshon Moreno, Mikel LeShoure, Shane Vereen) Nick's shrewd trade of Aaron Rodgers for arguably the top fantasy player in the game gives him three keeper-level RBs for his starting lineup.
Honarable mention: Dave (Chris Johnson, LeGarrette Blount, Ryan Grant, Beanie Wells)

WORST RBs
Hunt (Arian Foster, Fred Jackson, Justin Forsett, Tashard Choice, Ricky Williams) Foster was the top player overall last year, but Hunt's trade of Peterson left him with low-level backups to fill in the rest of his RB corp.

BEST WRs
Colin (Larry Fitzgerald, Desean Jackson, Stevie Johnson, Steve Smith CAR, Anthony Armstrong, Steve Breaston) On the surface, Colin doesn't have a top 5 receiver.  But I see a committee with good upside and a ton of depth.
Honorable mention: Will (Calvin Johnson, Kenny Britt, Johnny Knox, Jacoby Ford, Jordan Shipley, Terrell Owens)

WORST WRs
Stratis (Reggie Wayne, Crabtree, Danario Alexander) I understand Mike's strategy was to load up on RBs, but I think he went too far.  I don't expect a Crabtree breakout year, and Alexander might not even start for a bad Rams offense.

BEST TEAM NAME
Colin His Jacobs pick was the only blemish on an otherwise stellar draft of value picks and bench players with upside.

WORST DRAFT
Hunt Matt started out the day with the best keepers in the league, in Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster and Miles Austin.  He finished it with Danny Amendola in his flex spot.  Yikes.
